Traveller using a phone with a South Korea eSIM

South Korea eSIM
Routing you from Incheon onwards

Korea is an app-first country: Naver Map for directions, KakaoT for taxis, KakaoTalk for everything else. Scan one QR code before you fly and your phone joins an SKT or KT-grade network the moment you land, with no SIM swap and no counter to find.

Why an eSIM in Korea

In Korea, data is mobility

Taxis, restaurant queues, translation, transit, reservations — nearly every part of a Korean itinerary happens inside an app.

Naver Map is the real map

Google Maps has limited walking and transit routing in Korea, so most visitors switch to Naver Map or KakaoMap. Both need a live connection for routes and subway transfers.

KakaoT removes the language barrier

Hailing on the street can be hit or miss for foreign visitors. With KakaoT you type the destination and the driver just drives — but the app needs data the entire time.

Straight out of Incheon

Rental Wi-Fi desks at T1 and T2 get busy. With an eSIM you can check the AREX schedule and your hotel location while still walking to the train.

QR menus and virtual queues

Korean restaurants lean heavily on tablet ordering, QR menus and CatchTable waitlists — and you will want Papago open for the Korean-only ones.

Busan and Jeju included

Plans use nationwide carriers, so Haeundae, Gyeongju, the Jeju ring road and the Gangwon ski resorts are all covered.

Home number stays live

The eSIM handles data only, so your usual SIM keeps receiving verification codes and card alerts throughout the trip.

Choosing days

How many days do you need?

Days run in 24-hour blocks from activation. Count your arrival and departure days both.

Setup

Installing your Korea eSIM

Done at home in five minutes. Nothing to configure after you land.

  1. Choose Korea and your days

Confirm the plan is unlimited per day and allows hotspot sharing.

  2. Pay online

Card or PayPal. The eSIM QR code is emailed to you straight away.

  3. Scan on Wi-Fi

iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Use QR Code. Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add eSIM.

  4. Land and enable roaming

Turn off airplane mode, set mobile data to the Korea eSIM, and switch data roaming on for that line.

Important: install on Wi-Fi before you leave — the process needs a connection. Do not delete the profile once installed, as QR codes are usually single-use. And turn data roaming off on your home line so your own carrier does not bill you.

Practical notes for South Korea

Which Korean network will I be on?

Korea's three carriers are SK Telecom (SKT), KT and LG U+. Travel eSIMs generally roam onto SKT or KT, which have the most consistent performance across the Seoul metropolitan area, the entire subway system, the KTX corridor, Jeju and Gangwon.

Subway and KTX signal

The Seoul subway has full coverage including transfer passages — streaming video underground is normal here. KTX routes stay connected too, with brief dips in long tunnels.

Apps worth installing before you fly

  • Naver Map / KakaoMap: the practical choice for directions and public transport.
  • KakaoT: taxis, with the destination typed rather than spoken.
  • Papago: translation, including live camera translation of Korean menus and signs.
  • KakaoTalk: the default messaging app; guesthouses and tour operators often use it.

Register for these at home while you still have your usual number for SMS verification.

Can I make phone calls?

Travel eSIMs are data-only and do not include a Korean number, so local calls and Korean SMS are not available. Most bookings can be handled over KakaoTalk or the web. Note that a few Korean domestic apps require a Korean number to register — if you need one of those, you will need a plan that includes voice service.

FAQ

South Korea eSIM questions

Should I install the eSIM at home or after arriving in Korea?

Install at home on Wi-Fi, since the process needs an internet connection. Installing does not start the clock — most plans begin counting days when you actually connect to a Korean network.

Does a Korea eSIM use SKT or KT?

It depends on the plan. Mainstream travel eSIMs roam onto SKT or KT, both of which cover Seoul, Busan, Jeju and the full subway network. The provider's plan page states which network is used.

Will Naver Map and KakaoT work on an eSIM?

Yes — they only need a data connection, not a Korean phone number. For KakaoT, link an internationally usable credit card in advance, or choose the pay-the-driver option at the end of the ride.

Can I tether and share with travel companions?

Most unlimited Korea plans support personal hotspot, so one purchase can cover a couple or a family. Some budget plans block tethering, so confirm before buying.

Is there coverage on Jeju and at the Gangwon ski resorts?

Yes. Korean network coverage is exceptionally dense, including the Jeju ring road and the main Pyeongchang and Yongpyong resort areas. Deep mountain trails can be patchy, so download an offline map as backup.

Is the data really unlimited, or will I be throttled?

Unlimited daily plans have no fixed cap. Ordinary travel use — navigation, social media, live streaming, video calls — is unaffected; providers only manage genuinely extreme usage.

Which phones work with a Korea eSIM?

iPhone XR / XS and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, and most mid-to-high-end Android phones from 2020 onwards. Check Settings → General → About for an EID, and make sure the phone is carrier-unlocked.
